What do we look for in a writer’s submission packet?
Does it follow the submission guidelines?
Does it have the number and types of sketches we’re asking for?
Does it fit the page length we requested?
If applicable, did you format your submission email correctly?
Are the sketches properly formatted? (We expect you to know what a properly formatted sketch should look like. Please, no sketches that look like they were typed up in Word or Pages!)
Point of View (POV)
Is your idea or your perspective original and unique? (And clear?)
Does your sketch say something and/or make a point?
We’d rather see a less than perfect sketch that is making a unique point
about something in society at large than the greatest version of something
that’s been done a million times before.
However, if your sketch is trying to cover a larger political idea but isn’t
done in a respectful way, that packet won’t be considered. Really think
about and break down what exactly you’re making fun of in your sketch.
Are you punching up or punching down? What is driving the sketch and
making us laugh? If the answers to these questions are problematic,
reconsider how you are framing your sketch/idea.
Is your sketch just downright silly? Great!
Not every sketch needs to say something. Some can just be fun and weird and that’s okay, too.
It still needs a strong POV, but it can be a silly POV!
Showcase the ability to write for different voices and make a point to make your sketches inclusive.
Applying for LIVE Teams? Your sketches should be written for stage.
We won’t throw your packet out if you have one video sketch in there that you really love. (But, we probably will if you submit two or more video sketches.)
Applying for DIGITAL Teams?
Stage sketches or video sketches will do, but give the medium you’re writing for a try!
Also, we only have so many spots. But, we do keep a waitlist of people to fill spots throughout the season. So just because you didn’t get on right away doesn’t mean you won’t be on a team in a few months. In the meantime, keep writing! Put up your stuff! Find the thing you love!
